Student Village holds a unique atmosphere. As the name suggests, it’s the largest student residence for the Turku Student Village Foundation (TYS) and boasts over 3,500 residential places. The village was completed between 1969-1979 and then renovated between 1994-2003.
It was TYS’s first construction project, the foundations of which were laid in the winter on the 3rd December 1968. There was a great need for student housing at the time as there were not enough available lodgings to rent for the cohorts of university students. The project was carried out in cooperation with student organizations, the City of Turku and the government.
The Student Village is Finland's largest single student-housing project. The area is divided into the east side and the west side, of which the east side was the last to be built up to the borders of the Halistenkoski Rapids. The architecture of the village buildings is characterized by open access to balconies and walkways between flats.
