What is Live Like a Local?

What is there to do in Turku and what is it that the locals really like? Live Like a Local is a guide that brings together helpful tips and suggestions for the Turku region, with both regular attractions as well as activities to help you create your unique, custom programme. For each day of the week we have collected our own suggestions that are easy to include.

The contents of Live Like a Local is seasonally based, so that most of what is scheduled for June will apply in July and August, allowing you to extend your trip that little bit longer.

Riverside Walk

Get to know Turku, from its history to the modern day, its culture and buildings, all along the River Aura shores. The walking tour leads visitors into the armchair of Turku – the banks of the River Aura.

The tour duration is 1.5 hours. The tour will be conducted in Finnish, Swedish and English.

When to go: 11 June–25 August from 1pm-2.30pm. In addition to Wednesdays, tours are also held on Mondays and Saturdays (except during Midsummer). All tours available via the link.

Tickets can be bought via Visit Turku’s online shop. Follow the link for online packages.

S/S Ukkopekka Evening Cruise

On summer evenings S/S Ukkopekka cruises to the beautiful island of Loistokari. The evening cruises include archipelago tapas aboard ship, an archipelago buffet on Loistokari, live music and dancing on the pier. The return journey to the Aura riverside is bathed in the glow of the slowly setting sun.

When to go: Tue-Sat at 7pm from June to August

Don’t forget to try these

Cafe Kakola

Head up the Kakolanmäki hill this summer to enjoy a coffee from a tin mug and the signature Kakola Cake. The café operates from the former prison warden’s home, constructed in 1879. In addition to coffee breaks, there are wonderful views over Turku and also a museum, giving visitors the chance to investigate the history of the notorious Kakola prison.

The café and museum are open during summer.

Food Walk

Rising in popularity, the fantastic Food Walk provides a cross-section of Turku’s restaurant culture. The card includes a selection of ten restaurants, from which the holder can choose five in which to eat. The restaurants are located along the River Aura and in downtown Turku, and the restaurant tour can be easily combined with the Museum Walk or Culture Walk tours.

NB! We recommend booking a table if your group four people or more.

Kupittaa Park

Kupittaa Park is oldest and largest urban park in Finland, where the whole family will find something to enjoy. With the kids in tow, the free Adventure Park and Bird Sanctuary are a must-visit. Traffic Town is both a fun and educational experience for the budding little drivers.
